The PGY1 Community-based Pharmacy Residency Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill prepares the resident to be an innovative clinical practitioner who can be a leader in the profession. The resident will have the skills, confidence and experience to create change and advance patient care services in community-based (outpatient) settings.
Our pharmacist-preceptors practice at the top of their education and training and are invested in your personal and professional development. Other resident responsibilities include precepting student pharmacists, teaching in a classroom setting at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, attending resident seminars, and conducting practice-based projects. A leadership certificate and a teaching and learning certificate are also available to interested candidates.
Our program includes a variety of innovative sites across the state of North Carolina in independent, chain, supermarket, college health, ambulatory care, public health department and free and charitable pharmacy settings.
Sites for 2026-2027 include:
Cape Fear Clinic: Community-based / Free and Charitable Pharmacy (NMS 193226)
Duplin County Health Department: Community-based / Public Health Department (NMS 193227)
Candidates must have a PharmD degree and be eligible for North Carolina pharmacist licensure. IMPORTANT: Due to the change in application fees to multi-site programs, we no longer require separate applications for each site through PhORCAS. Please submit only one application, for the site of your choice, via PHORCAS. PhORCAS application materials include one (1) letter of intent addressed to the Residency Program Director, curriculum vitae, pharmacy school transcript, three (3) letters of recommendation, and a leadership statement answering the question “What is your philosophy on leadership?” (limit 500 words). Indicate all sites for which your application should be considered via the supplemental application. Residents will be required to complete a background check during the onboarding process.
The PGY1 Community-based Pharmacy Residency Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was established in 2000. It is the largest and one of the oldest accredited residency programs of its kind in the nation.
Our program includes a variety of innovative sites across the state of North Carolina in independent, chain, supermarket, college health, ambulatory care, public health department and free and charitable pharmacy settings. Each site is centered around a community pharmacy that focuses on providing medication management, health and wellness services, immunizations, disease state management, and care transitions services.
