UNCW Campus Recreation is now accepting applications for three Graduate Assistant positions for the upcoming academic year. These assistantships provide hands-on professional experience in collegiate recreation while supporting student engagement, wellbeing, leadership development, and applied learning. Graduate Assistants work closely with professional staff and gain practical experience that prepares them for careers in higher education, recreation, and sport-related fields.
Available Graduate Assistant Positions
Graduate Assistant – Fitness & Instructional Programs This position supports instructional fitness and wellbeing initiatives within Campus Recreation. Responsibilities include assisting with group fitness operations, staff training and development, certification preparation courses, special events, applied learning experiences for student staff, and assessment of instructional programs.
Graduate Assistant – Aquatics & Facility Operations This position assists with aquatics programming and facility operations, including support of the Learn-to-Swim program, supervision and training of swim instructors, scheduling, safety and risk management, facility operations, special events, and administrative projects related to aquatics and facilities.
Graduate Assistant – Competitive Sports This position supports the administration of competitive sports programs, including intramurals and sport clubs. Responsibilities include recruiting, training, scheduling, and evaluating officials and student staff; mentoring sport clubs; assisting with event management; maintaining records; and facilitating clinics, workshops, and leadership development opportunities.
General Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required (preferably in a related field)
Acceptance into a UNCW graduate program required
Interest in campus recreation, student development, leadership, or wellbeing initiatives
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Previous experience in recreation, fitness, aquatics, or competitive sports preferred
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
Relevant certifications may be required or obtained within a specified timeframe depending on position
