The New Community School is currently hiring an Upper School College and Career Counselor for the 2026-2027 school year.
Job Description
The Upper School College and Career Counselor serves as the primary guide for students and families through the postsecondary planning process. Working closely with students in grades 9–12, the Counselor supports individualized college and career exploration, application strategy, and transition planning, with particular attention to best-fit environments for students with learning differences.
This role requires deep knowledge of college admissions, disability services in higher education, and alternative postsecondary pathways, along with a strong commitment to student self-advocacy and skill development.
Essential Responsibilities
Program Design & Leadership
Design, implement, and continuously refine a comprehensive, developmentally aligned college and career readiness program for grades 9–12
Embed executive functioning instruction and self-advocacy development into the college process
Develop structured programming that prepares students to understand and communicate their learning profiles confidently
Track and analyze postsecondary outcomes to inform program growth and improvement
Individualized Student Guidance
Guide students and families in identifying best-fit colleges, universities, technical programs, gap year opportunities, and career pathways
Support students in evaluating disability services, academic support programs, and campus learning environments
Provide individualized guidance on course selection, standardized testing policies, essays, applications, interviews, and financial aid
Write compelling, personalized counselor letters of recommendation
Coach students in developing organizational systems and project management strategies for managing application timelines
Career Development
Design and facilitate structured career exploration programming
Coordinate career panels, guest speakers, internships, and experiential learning opportunities
Support résumé development, interview preparation, and professional communication skills
Partner with faculty to integrate career readiness into coursework where appropriate
Family Partnership & Communication
Serve as primary point of contact for families throughout the college process
Host workshops on financial aid, admissions trends, testing policies, and disability accommodations in higher education
Maintain clear, transparent communication regarding timelines and expectations
External Partnerships
Build and maintain relationships with college admissions representatives
Coordinate and host college visits on campus
Advocate for TNCS students within the admissions process
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
Master’s degree in School Counseling, Higher Education, Special Education, or related field preferred
3–5+ years of experience in college counseling, admissions, or secondary school counseling
Deep knowledge of current college admissions trends and alternative postsecondary pathways
Familiarity with supporting students with dyslexia and related learning differences
Strong understanding of executive functioning development in adolescents
Exceptional writing skills, particularly for counselor recommendations
Ability to balance high-touch individualized support with program-level systems thinking
Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with faculty and leadership
Commitment to strengths-based education and equity in access to postsecondary opportunities
Experience in an independent or small-school setting is preferred.
Salary Information: Salary is commensurate with experience.
