The Math Support Specialist at the University Liggett School supports high-quality mathematics instruction by working directly with students and coaching teachers. This role consists of direct intervention for students who require additional math support or enrichment, with instructional coaching designed to improve classroom instruction. This role will also teach math courses as needed, commensurate with their expertise. The Math Support Specialist collaborates closely with teachers, learning specialists, and school leadership to ensure all students experience rigorous, responsive, and developmentally appropriate math instruction.
Student Support and Enrichment
Facilitate and provide targeted math intervention for students requiring support or enrichment using accommodation plans, co-teaching models, small group instruction, consultation approaches, and other best practices in student support.
Utilize assessment data to plan for and implement small and individual academic interventions and monitor progress over time.
Develop profile sheets and academic plans for students with documented learning differences with the Director of Student Support Services.
Collaborate with classroom teachers, learning specialists, and families to align interventions with classroom instruction.
Periodically discuss and lead math programming with the ULS parent community.
Help to design and implement math assessments as part of the admissions process; assist with reading files of prospective students as needed.
Teach and lead mathematics classes within the school day as needed.
Fulfill one additional co-curricular duty, ideally related to the enrichment of mathematics.
Instructional Coaching
Partner with classroom teachers to strengthen math instruction and small-group support.
Model effective math instructional practices, including differentiation, use of manipulatives, and conceptual understanding.
Observe classroom instruction and provide actionable, strengths-based feedback.
Support teachers in planning lessons that address a wide range of learners and learning profiles through best practices in differentiated instruction.
Facilitate data-informed conversations around student progress and instructional decision-making.
Curriculum & Program Development
Support the alignment and coherence of the math curriculum in partnership with mathematics department leadership.
Help ensure instructional practices reflect research-based mathematics pedagogy.
Collaborate on schoolwide initiatives related to math instruction and student support.
Collaboration & Professional Learning
Work closely with learning specialists, division heads, and administrators to support student success.
Contribute or create professional development learning related to math instruction, intervention, and differentiation.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in mathematics education or a related field preferred
Experience teaching mathematics from a wide range of learners'
Demonstrated experience supporting learners with math difficulties
Multisensory math curriculum experience
Experience and training in differentiating math instruction to support a wide range of learners, including students who need additional support as well as those who benefit from enrichment and challenge
Experience in instructional coaching, mentoring, or professional learning facilitation.
Knowledge of best practices in math intervention and differentiation
Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
Ability to connect with students of diverse backgrounds to develop healthy, supportive, and responsive relationships
