GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY
The Lower Elementary Guide helps direct students’ activities academically, socially, emotionally, and physically in a prepared Montessori Environment that challenges each child to reach his or her fullest potential in these developmental areas.
JOB SCOPE
Collaborates with Lower Elementary Teaching Assistant and other school professionals to meet the needs of all students emotionally, socially, and academically. May be asked to help organize field trips, or to work with room parents for organizing classroom activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Implements all curricula in the classroom
Supervises and works cooperatively with the Lower Elementary Teaching Assistant
Meets with the Lower Elementary Teaching Assistant to explain the classroom duties and responsibilities towards the beginning of the academic year
Participates in weekly meetings with the Lower Elementary Teaching Assistant to discuss the individual needs of the students and classroom environment in general, keeping notes in Teams
Prepares and maintains the prepared Montessori environment
Responsible for care and maintenance of classroom materials, maintaining an orderly environment and keeping it clean and in good condition
Maintains classroom inventory and submits it to the Director of Lower Elementary at the end of each school year, including replacement needs/requests
Maintains updated records of each child’s progress
Conducts conferences with parents
Keeps records of parent communications and reports same to Director of Lower Elementary
Follows through as needed with individualized student needs, including accommodations for Learning Profiles
Prepares and submits required reports, including conference reports and reading assessments
Updates classroom webpage and calendar on a monthly basis
Interviews and hosts prospective students
Collaborates with the Director of Lower Elementary regarding issues related directly to the materials and practices in the classroom
Participates in a regular evaluation process including classroom observations, self-evaluation, and annual goal setting
Communicates with parents, administrators, and student support staff concerning the emotional and physical well-being of students.
Shares responsibility for the safety and physical well-being of the students
Greets students in carpool, ensuring their safety as they exit or enter their vehicle
Implements guidelines for behavior in the classroom, helping foster each student’s social and academic growth
Shares with Lower Elementary Teaching Assistant any observation regarding student behavior, relaying information directly to Director of Lower Elementary when necessary
Reports all accidents/incidents at once. Completes Incident Report and delivers copies of the same to parent and School Nurse
Supervises students during lunch prep, lunch, and recess
Assists with field trip planning and preparation, and attends field trips
Attends school, community, and/or parent education events as detailed in the Employee Handbook or as assigned by Director of Lower Elementary
Attends and actively participates in Lower Elementary team meetings, and other meetings as assigned
Commits to professional development and best practices in Montessori education
Complies with the content of the Employee Handbook for all duties not listed
Adheres to the behaviors described in the Alcuin Standards of Faculty Excellence
Other duties as assigned by the Director of Lower Elementary and/or Head of School
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
Completes bus drivers training and drives students in an Alcuin school bus as needed for school related activities
Mentors new Lower Elementary Teaching Assistants as requested by the Director of Lower Elementary
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Required:
Ability to provide documents verifying authorization to work in the U.S.
Must pass Criminal Background Checks and Drug Testing
Bachelor’s Degree
AMI 6-12 Diploma
Teaching experience
Strong Interpersonal skills
Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite of products
Ability to interact and communicate professionally with colleagues, students, parents, and others in the school community and during off-campus school related activities
Ability to function as a team with colleagues and Director of Lower Elementary, and with other administrators as required
