Position Summary: The Head Athletic Trainer provides leadership, clinical oversight, and administrative management of the College’s athletic training and sports medicine program, supporting student-athlete health, safety, regulatory compliance, and athletic performance. This position directs all aspects of injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation services while ensuring compliance with National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA), Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC), and institutional policies.
The Head Athletic Trainer supervises athletic training personnel and student athletic trainers, coordinates healthcare services for student-athletes, and manages athletic training operations. This position works closely with the Athletic Director, coaches, and others across the College to promote student-athlete academic success, retention, and development while fostering a culture focused on safety, professionalism, and student success.
Essential Functions Athletic Training Program Leadership •Provides leadership and direction for the College’s athletic training and sports medicine program. •Promotes a culture emphasizing student-athlete health, safety, and development. •Supervises the Assistant Athletic Trainer and student athletic trainers. •Develops and implements procedures and best practices for athletic training services. •Coordinates practice and game medical coverage for intercollegiate athletic programs. •Promotes a positive and professional environment focused on student success and well-being.
Sports Medicine Operations and Compliance •Provides injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation services for student-athletes. •Maintains accurate, timely, and confidential medical documentation. •Coordinates care with physicians, physical therapists, and other healthcare providers. •Ensures compliance with NJCAA, NIRA, WJCAC, and institutional regulations for collegiate athletics. •Oversees emergency action plans and risk management procedures. •Monitors student-athlete medical eligibility and participation clearance requirements.
Personnel and Program Administration •Supervises mentors, and evaluates the Assistant Athletic Trainer. •Recruits, trains, and supervises student athletic trainers. •Oversees athletic training facilities, equipment, and supplies. •Assists with budget planning, purchasing, and resource management. •Develops procedures supporting effective program operations. •Maintains appropriate inventory control and equipment maintenance.
Student-Athlete Support and Success •Promotes student-athlete academic success, persistence, and completion. •Collaborates with coaches and others across the College to support student success initiatives. •Educates student-athletes on injury prevention, wellness, and recovery. •Promotes leadership development and professionalism among student athletic trainers. •Supports a student-centered athletic environment focused on holistic development.
Collaboration and Program Development •Works collaboratively with coaches to support student-athlete performance and safety. •Serves as liaison between athletics and healthcare providers. •Assists with planning, assessment, and program evaluation activities for athletics. •Supports institutional initiatives related to student success and student wellness. •Participates in professional development to maintain clinical expertise and certifications.
Additional Responsibilities ?Serves on institutional committees as assigned. ?Maintains current professional certifications and licensure. ?Adheres to institutional, WJCAC, NJCAA, and NIRA policies. ?Maintains knowledge of current athletic training practices and regulatory requirements. ?Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, Kinesiology, or related field.
BOC Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) and licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Texas.
CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
Minimum three (3) years of athletic training experience.
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Work Schedule and Physical Requirements
Requires a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions
Requires standing and walking for extended periods, and lifting, carrying, and assisting with the movement and stabilization of injured student-athletes (up to 50 pounds)
