The Advent School seeks a skilled and collaborative educator to serve as an Elementary Reading Specialist for a maternity leave position during the 2026–2027 school year.
This role supports students across Kindergarten through Grade 6 and is responsible for ensuring the continuity of student-centered, structured literacy instruction grounded in Orton-Gillingham principles. The Advent School is inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy and rooted in principles of social justice. We seek educators who believe deeply in education for equity and who are committed to fostering student agency and growth. Over the past five years, we have built a cohesive, schoolwide model for reading intervention that reflects our commitment to equity—ensuring that students with diagnosed learning disabilities receive the targeted instruction and accommodations they need to access the curriculum fully and thrive as learners.
This is a temporary leave position beginning in August 2026 and continuing through November 2026, with the potential to extend based on school needs.
Responsibilities & Duties
Teachers at The Advent School know their students well and use this knowledge to design and facilitate instruction grounded in best practices in literacy development.
The Elementary Reading Specialist will:
Ensure the continuity of student-centered, structured, multisensory literacy instruction grounded in Orton-Gillingham principles for an established caseload of students
Provide pull-out reading intervention services for students in Kindergarten through Grade 6, working in individual and small-group sessions
Continue service delivery for students currently identified for reading intervention, maintaining consistency in instructional approach and routines and progress monitoring
Plan and deliver systematic, diagnostic Orton-Gillingham lessons tailored to individual student profiles
Monitor student progress and maintain documentation of instructional goals and growth
Provide regular updates to classroom teachers regarding student progress
Serve as a liaison to classroom teachers, offering recommendations for appropriate classroom accommodations and instructional supports
Collaborate with learning specialists and classroom teachers to ensure alignment between intervention and classroom instruction
Fulfill additional duties and responsibilities as needed within the school community
Updates and reporting to families on a monthly basis
Required Skills & Characteristics

Orton-Gillingham Preparation Requirements
Minimum requirement: Completion of an Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator / OG Classroom Teacher training (typically 30–60+ hours of coursework)
Preference given to candidates holding Associate-level certification, or those working toward Associate certification
Advanced credentials (Certified or Fellow level) welcomed but not required
Qualifications
BA/BS degree required; advanced degree preferred
2+ years of elementary teaching or reading intervention experience
Experience working within an inclusive school setting preferred
