Compensation: $30-$50 per hour, commensurate with education and qualifications
OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE The School Nurse serves as the primary on-campus health professional and leads all aspects of the school’s health program. This role combines direct student care with program leadership, including oversight of health policies, medication management and documentation, health plan management and documentation, healthcare protocols, and staff training.
The School Nurse works closely with the administrators, teachers, counselors, and families to support a whole-child approach to student well-being and to ensure thoughtful, consistent, and compliant health practices across the school.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Leadership & Decision Making
Assess student health needs and determine appropriate care, including when students may return to class, require exclusion, or need further medical evaluation
Develop and manage student individualized health care plans and emergency action plans every year
Exercise clinical judgement in responding to illness, injury, and ongoing health concerns
Serve as the primary health resource for the school community
Independently manage all aspects of the school health office, including clinical care, electronic health records, systems, and daily operations

Maintain medications, supplies, and equipment
Ensure safe storage and compliance Prepare for field trips and overnight programs
Triage and Illness Prevention and Treatment
Provide first aid and clinical care to students (and staff as necessary)
Maintain electronic health records and communicate with families
Administer prescription and over-the-counter medications in accordance with individual permissions and school policy
Monitor communicable illness, provide information to administration and families, and coordinate with public health agencies as needed
Lead staff training on first aid, emergency response, and administration of rescue medications
Maintain medications, supplies, and equipment
Ensure safe storage and compliance
Prepare for field trips and overnight programs
QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred
Registered Nurse (RN) license in California strongly preferred; other licensed healthcare providers with significant pediatric or school-based experience may be considered
3+ years clinical experience (pediatric or school setting preferred)
Familiarity with California immunization requirements
Required
2+ years of experience, preferably working with children
Ability to work independently and exercise sound clinical judgment
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation and systems
Excellent communication skills and a warm, professional presence with students, families, and colleagues
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic school environment
